Trochanteric bursitis

In this condition there is pain on the upper outer aspect of the leg, which often presents as difficulty lying and indeed sleeping on the affected side due to the pain present. Bursitis usually responds reasonably well to conservative treatment, with the use of anti-inflammatory medication, physiotherapy and occasionally steroid injections. Surgery is used only in extreme cases where conservative therapy has failed, and the tissues are surgically decompressed.
