Mr Sandhu was appointed as a Consultant in Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery at The Royal United Hospital in Bath, with a specialist interest in complex hip surgery as well as lower limb surgery in 2005.
Mr Sandhu medically qualified from Magdalene College at Cambridge University, and thereafter trained mainly in England. He has also gained experience in several major centres of excellence in North America to enhance his knowledge and operative ability, learning about modern technology and techniques.
His main interest and expertise is in the field of hip surgery, and he is an expert at major complex and reconstructive joint replacement procedures. This particularly includes revision surgery for patients referred with either failed or poorly working hip replacements. He has introduced 'trabecular metal technology' into the Royal United Hospital, Bath where operations which were not previously possible, are now being performed.
Mr Sandhu performs a wide variety of hip procedures tailored to the individual needs of his patients, from hip resurfacing and hip conserving surgery to high demand metal-on-metal hip replacements. This enables his patients to continue with their sporting and other social functional requirements. There is no 'routine' hip replacement in his practice.
Trauma and emergency fracture orthopaedics are a major part of his work, with his specialist knowledge and expertise having been gained through a trauma fellowship at a level one trauma centre in North America.
Research and academia are major interests for Mr Sandhu, who heads research in The Hip Unit in Bath. He has published several major clinical articles recently, and is currently heading several further projects which will be presented both nationally and internationally in the coming year. He also attends and lectures at international orthopaedic conferences. This academic side not only does Mr Sandhu find stimulating and challenging, but it enables him to be up to date in his practice, especially with respect to the latest published research and current evidence-based practice.
Mr Sandhu has lived happily now in Bath since 1999, and is happily settled here with his 'better half' in his own words! He is an active member of Bath Society, and is aiming to provide a quality service to the community of which he himself is a member.
