Mr Pope was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, in February 2001.
Having worked in a combination of major London teaching hospitals and busy district hospitals during his post-registration and Specialist Registrar training posts, he received comprehensive tuition in all aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. This was further enhanced during a fellowship year in Brisbane, Australia.
He has a general orthopaedic practice with particular interests in hip and knee surgery, and the management of back pain.
Mr Pope has a large practice in hip and knee replacement surgery, and in arthroscopy (key hole surgery) of the knee. He is able to offer patients a variety of surgical options and his knowledge of the wide range of available hip and knee components, means he can provide patients with personalised advice on the most appropriate prosthetic joint for them.
Mr Pope recognises the need to continually develop his clinical skills in the area of hip and knee surgery, and is developing an interest in revision knee replacement surgery. He has several research publications to his name and has presented at local and national orthopaedic meetings.
He also recognises the importance of training 'the next generation' and is actively involved in teaching medical students, junior doctors and other hospital staff. He has also taken on responsibility of overseeing the training of orthopaedic specialist Registrars in Bath, and he sits on the Specialist Training Committee in the Severn Deanery.
Outside of work Mr Pope has a strong family commitment, and whatever spare time he has is spent with his four energetic young children and the family's expanding menagerie of animals.
